Hammertoes: Causes, Treatment, and Recovery

What is a Hammertoe?

A hammertoe is a deformity in which one of the four smaller toes becomes bent at the middle joint, resembling a hammer. This condition is often caused by wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes, muscle imbalances, or underlying medical conditions such as arthritis. Over time, hammertoes can become painful and may require medical intervention.

Treatment Options for Hammertoes

Hammertoes can be managed with non-surgical treatments such as orthotics, toe exercises, and proper footwear. However, in more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the deformity and alleviate pain.

Surgery for Hammertoes

If surgery is recommended, your surgeon will start by taking X-rays of your foot. They can then discuss the procedure options, including surgery with pins or a surgical screw.

Hammertoe surgery involves straightening the affected toe by removing part of the bone, releasing tight tendons, or inserting hardware such as pins to hold the toe in the correct position. The type of procedure depends on the severity of the condition and the patient’s overall foot health.

Recovery Following Hammertoe Surgery with Pins

For some patients, pins (Kirschner wires or K-wires) are used to keep the toe in place during healing.

Recovery from hammertoe surgery with pins generally takes several weeks. During this time, patients are advised to keep their foot elevated, minimise walking, and follow post-operative care instructions provided by their doctor.

The pins are typically removed after a few weeks, depending on the healing progress.

Walking After Hammertoe Surgery

Walking after hammertoe surgery varies based on the type of procedure performed.

Patients who undergo minimally invasive surgery can usually walk with special footwear and crutches within a couple of days.

For those with pins, weight-bearing activity is usually limited until the pins are removed. Following rehabilitation exercises and wearing appropriate footwear can help ensure a smooth recovery.

Hammertoes can be painful and affect daily activities, but effective treatments, including surgery, can restore foot function and comfort.

If you are considering hammertoe surgery, consult with a foot specialist to discuss the best treatment plan for your condition.
